Suzanne Fields Obituary

Suzanne "Suzi" C. Fields
May 7, 1946 - June 26, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - A graveside service for Suzanne C. Fields, 75, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. There will be a livestream of the service starting at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021, on Dunbar Funeral Home – Devine's Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DunbarDevine.
Mrs. Fields died Saturday, June 26, 2021. Born May 7, 1946, in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of the late George Irwin and Sylvia Harriett Fisher, and the wife of Dr. Sander Martin Fields.
"Suzi" grew up in the Oak Park suburb of Detroit, with a large extended family. She graduated from Oak Park High School and went on to complete a bachelor's degree in education from Wayne State University. She met her husband, Sander, of 54 years while working together at a summer camp in Michigan. She began a career in elementary education that would span over 30 years. In 1978 she and her family relocated to Spartanburg, S.C., where she taught elementary mathematics in the Spartanburg Public School system. During this time, she also completed a master's degree in gifted education at Converse College. She and her family eventually settled in Columbia, S.C., in 1985 where she continued to work as a schoolteacher in Richland School Districts One and Two. She retired from teaching in 1999 with numerous awards including Richland County District Two "Teacher of the Year."
Throughout her retirement, she remained in contact with former students who would often come to visit her at home into their adult years. She also continued to tutor at her home. She was more than just a teacher. She was a confidant, mentor and friend. She was a smart, witty, and good human being. Suzi loved spending time with her husband and sons' families. She maintained childhood friendships throughout her life. Suzi loved gardening and maintaining her home and yard.
She loved beach music and 1950s era Rock-and-Roll. Her grandchildren were taught the "low-country shag" at an early age and were often recruited as dance partners during visits at her home, in department stores, restaurants or wherever they happened to be. She inherited a love of photography from her father, George, and could always be counted on to record family gatherings and events. Suzi loved to write about her family and life experiences. She was often quoted and photographed in local publications. She and Sandy co-authored a children's book.
Surviving are her husband, Sander, and sons, Andrew/wife Becky, and James/wife Danna; grandchildren, Player, Andrew, Mary, Parker and Allie Fields; sister, Mary Lou Hobbs; and many cousins and extended family.

I was so sad to read about Suzi this morning. To her family, I was only around her 3 or 4 times having met her through mutual friends, but boy did she leave an impact. What a Light of Love and friendliness! And even got to shag with her as well!!! Prayers of Comfort and Peace to all of you.

You will be missed and I will continue to think of you often. I pray God's peace over your family for His is the peace that passes understanding.

Suzi was one in a million. No other like her. She undoubtedly loved life and her family. My memories of her are flooded of laughter, her contagious smile and her wit. May God welcome her into His Kingdom with open arms. I pray for Sandy, Jamie, Andy and families to find comfort in knowing she is living eternal life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Suzi was the sunshine in everyone´s life! She was always happy to see me. We met at Windsor Elementary School over 31 years ago and even after I "retired" from Windsor when my first son was born, we stayed in touch. She had a heart of gold! Always welcoming me into her home and teaching me life lessons I´ll hold onto forever. Her yard was always absolutely gorgeous! She took pride in it as well as her care, love and concern for all who knew and loved her! She raised two fabulous sons, who I have had the privilege to get to know over the years. She loved her husband deeply. She boasted about her husband, sons, daughter in laws and grandchildren - her pride and joy in life! Family meant everything to her and her legacy will live on through them! So many fun experiences with her that we can all treasure. You will be sorely missed! Love you, sweet friend! Am so blessed to have known you and am a better person because of you! Sending warm hugs and prayers to the family! I pray you find comfort in knowing so many people love and care for you!

My deepest condolences to the Fields family. Suzi was "A doll" as she sometimes would say but more importantly she was a friend, teacher, someone you could share plant talk with, awesome shagger and so much more. I met her when she taught my son David 4th.grade math some 30plus years ago and since then we became friends, keeping in touch with each other's lives. She will be missed but will always be loved!
