I've known Syd since my undergraduate days at the Eastman School of Music both as a friend and as a composer. Syd was a find for all the schools he taught at. At the level of technique and musical language, Syd knew the literature; had conducted, learned and taught music in all the styles that evolved during his lifetime; and could conduct, describe and/or teach them - whatever was needed.
