T. Darrah Thomas

I worked & played with Darrah as junior member of his support staff. He was the best! The world is poorer for his passing!

At the moment I am preparing for a brief presentation for the OSU Chemistry Memorial Symposium for Darrah Thomas on 12/7/2021. Summarizing Darrah's impact on my personal and professional life is nearly impossible. I had a postdoctoral appointment at his lab in the OSU Radiation Center, 1972 - 1974. Darrah taught me so much about science and electron spectroscopy. I was his post doc 1977-79. He was a great scientist .. a type we dont see too often these days James K. Dear Barbara and the Thomas family Our condolences for the passing of Darrah. We fondly recall our visits to Corvallis including, on one occasion the July 4th celebratory picknick. We also recall the extended visit of Darrah to the University of Groningen as part of the 3-person team to demonstrate the feasibility of Auger Photoelectron coincidence measurements in a sold, opening a new field of spectroscopy. Darrah, my thesis advisor at Princeton. left for OSU in my 3rd year and in so doing instilled invaluable (though, at the time, unwelcome) independence. We kept in touch for many years, never failing to remind me, "Live and learn". He was a very special part of my life and I will truly miss him.
