I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Mr. Virkhaus on two occasions when my music group was entertaining at his retirement home. He was such a friendly, cheerful, and gracious man. He make my group of volunteers feel comfortable performing for him, such a talented musician. I am sorry for your loss.

I first met Dr. Virkhaus when I entered the University of Rochester. He was the Director of the River Campus Music Programs and the coveted All University Symphony Orchestra besides teaching music classes at the River Campus and Conducting at the Eastman School of Music in downtown Rochester. Taavo hired Roger Wilhelm to supervise the Choral/Vocal groups working harmoniously with the famed conductor and arranger, Robert deCormier. I have fond memories of Taavo when he was at the University of Rochester River Campus. He was strict when in his office, but could be quite the jokester when dashing along the academic quadrangle. Nancy taught those of us in the Women's Ensemble great breathing exercises.

I had the privilege of singing the soprano solo role in Mozart’s Requiem when Maestro Virkhaus conducted it in Duluth. He was a wonderful musician and a lovely person. I am sorry for his family’s loss and send my deepest sympathy.
