CARTER, Taft S. Sr., age 99, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at home. He was the widower of Frances Hanby Carter. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Frances Hoover and her husband, Ken, of Durham, N.C.; his son, Taft S. Carter Jr. and his wife, Gary, of Powhatan, Va.; four grandchildren, D. Keith Hoover of Durham, N.C., A. Sherman Hoover of Ashville, N.C., Hanby B. Carter and wife, Paula, of Richmond, and Kay Carter Larkin and husband, Charles, of Richmond; two great-granddaughters, Leanne M. Larkin and Lucy B. Larkin of Richmond; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Leslye E. Rowland and her husband, Darin, of Phildelphia, Pa., W. Nicholas Kazas and Alexandra M. Kazas of Richmond. He was a retired salesman and longtime member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School, and sang in the church choir for many years. He made several violins by hand and played them as well. He also loved hunting, fishing, and baseball. His family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bliley's -Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Woodland Heights Baptish Church, 611 W. 31st St., Richmond, Va. 23225.
