Ted Kavrukov Obituary

Ted Kavrukov of Fredericksburg,VA, passed away at home on August 21, 2025 following a long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. He was brave, from surviving childhood illness until he managed to escape Communist Bulgaria in 1958, after surreptitiously scouting the borders of Serbia, then, Yugoslavia, and Greece. Ultimately, he, his mother and brother Ivan escaped into Macedonia. In the 1960's he worked with a language school teaching Bulgarian to government personnel, eventually getting his Bachelor's degree. Later, he got his law degree, choosing to practice criminal law in D.C. for a number of years. Ted was impressed by the rule of law in the United States with its emphasis on fair and impartial trials, unlike the Soviet style communism in Bulgaria, where his father, a member of military intelligence, was persecuted. In the mid-1980's he chose to specialize in family law in Northern Virginia.
Ted loved to ride his bicycles, a life-long passion which he shared with family and friends. Once as a young adolescent he took off on his single gear bike from Plovdiv to Sofia, a 100km ride, landing at his aunt's house, who put him up for the night and on the train home the next morning. He also loved history, soccer and backgammon. He is survived by his wife Harriet, his brother Ivan, three adult step-children, and five grandchildren.
