Ted was such a leader in bringing spirited contemporary art to the South that his influence and impact cannot be overstated. His visionary creation of SECCA, his inauguration of awards and fellowship programs, and his wide ranging taste set a high standard for others to follow. Richmond is forever fortunate that Ted started anew at the Anderson Gallery at a time when others would have gone quietly into retirement. Though I never had the chance to meet Ted Potter, I felt the impact of his influence in the 1980's as his important work rippled through the art world and inspired dialog even at the Lyndon House Arts Center in Athens, Georgia.

OUr thoughts and prayers are with the whole Potter family.

I have much gratitude for knowing Ted for all the years of my career starting in the '70's at SECCA and extending to his time in Richmond. My sympathies to the immediate and extended family.

From my first day of work in 1980, I realized I'd been adopted into the SECCA family. I immediately felt at home, because Ted always treated me (and his staff) with kindness, respect and dignity. Under his leadership and innovative programming, he let his staff know, in his own quiet way, that regardless of our SECCA position or status in life, each of us was vital to SECCA's growth and future.
