Not sure what to say?

With sincere sympathy.

Dear Trisha, I chanced across your husband's obituary today in the middle of one of those periphrastic explorations that the Internet so seductively draws one into. I want to say hello to you after almost thirty years and to send you my condolences. I very much value having had you as a memoir teacher and thesis advisor, thank you for all you taught me and the help you gave me! I pray that God continues to give you His comfort after Terrence's death. It's been over a year now since he died,...

Trish, I was so sorry to hear of your loss today. Terry was a mentor of mine when I was doing clinical work at Hazelden, and the book on Merton and Zen that the two of you gave me was one that influenced my life and teaching. I am presently writing a book on how Zen changed the lives and thought of both Merton and Kerouac, two writers who have a lot in common despite their different life-styles. Thank you to both Terry and you for all the good works that you have done.

Patricia, I had the honor of having you as a guest lecturer in my MFA program through Seattle Pacific - I am so incredibly sorry for this.

Patricia so sorry for your loss of such an amazing man. I know you will enjoy the great memories you have. You are in my prayers

Dear Trish, I am so sorry to hear about Terry, but am glad I had the opportunity to meet him last year. Please call me if I can be of any help; I, of course, know how this feels and we will have a chance to catch up when you next come to NYC.
xoxo, Karen Koch
