Terry Bertin Obituary

Terry Kenneth Bertin
1950-2017
Terry Kenneth Bertin was born on the 15th of August 1950, in Houston, Texas, as a sixth generation Houstonian. He died at home on Thursday, the 20th of July 2017, due to complications from Multiple System Atrophy.
Terry graduated from Houston's Lee High School where he met his wife Nancy when they were only teenagers. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Terry returned to Houston where he devoted 47 years to genetic research, working with the UT Health Science Center and Baylor College of Medicine. Terry was also an entrepreneur, being one of three founders of Biomedical and Forensic Genetics, an independent laboratory that focused on Population Genetics and other genetic testing. During his career, he co-authored numerous publications dedicated to the advancement of human genetic science. When not working, Terry enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his Triumph motorcycle, sailing on his boat "Tenacity," scuba diving, cooking, wine, listening to music and, most of all, working on his home and yard.
Terry is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of 45 years, his two brothers Randy and Barry, his son Allen, his daughter Lindley Arnoldy, her husband Jason Arnoldy, and their son Alec.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 26th of July, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the Bagby Parish Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed toward St. Martin's Episcopal Church; or to the charity of one's choice.

Dear Nancy,

I had the chance to meet Terry during my time in the Brendan Lee lab 2003-2006 and came back in 2008 and 2013 for short visits.
It was always a great pleasure to be around Terry. He was very helpful, very competent and a great instructor.
We also used to talk about french food since my boyfriend (now husband) is French. When I left Houston, I moved to France and Terry seemed a bit jealous. I showed him the place that I will live in and he ask me to find him a place in the neighborhood.
Two years ago, we sold the place to move to Germany and one of my first thoughts was "what would Terry think of us selling this great place?"
He was always in my thoughts a lot and will always be.

I'm very sorry for your lost, Nancy.

I am glad to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Terry, if only for a short time. Terry was a smart and insightful man, thoughtful and methodical with a great eye for detail. I appreciated his input and thoughts and have missed him around the lab. It saddens me to know that we've lost such a great spirit.

I worked with Terry in the laboratory. He was super helpful and always made time to give me advice and counsel. More importantly, he was a good man. He will be missed!

Dear Nancy,

One of the best memories of my time in the Lee lab are my conversations with Terry in between experiments: about traveling, food and houses! I learned a lot with him, not just about science, but also about life and family.

I was very happy to see him two years ago at your place and chat like in the "old days". I am honored to call him a friend and I will certainly miss him (and his sound advice).

I am very sorry for your loss. Patricia

Dear Nancy and family,

What a joy it was to work with Terry at the Baylor College of Medicine in the Brendan Lee laboratory. As a native Houstonian, Terry and I liked to swap stories about the 'good old days' in Houston like Otto's hamburgers! I loved to hear the stories about the grandbaby and all of those wonderful trips you took together! We miss him so much! Love to you and your family and our deepest sympathies!

Nancy, we have such fun memories of our time spent together in Italy and in our little neighborhood there in Houston.
Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family, and send our love.

When I was a young, inexperienced graduate student, Terry patiently taught me everything about the lab, especially about maintaining high standards and paying attention to detail. To this day, the things I learned from Terry about science and life continue to guide my research. He was a tremendous person in every way - smart, dedicated, honest, and kind. Anyone who was lucky enough to have worked with him will never forget that experience. My heart and prayers go out to your entire family.

So very proud and inspired by the remarkable and magnificent dignity, grace and courage shown in your interminable battle with the insidious MSA disease. Though you will be missed more than I can express I count as a blessing that the suffering and frustration have passed. You were quite simply the best, my hero and I was always so proud and thankful that you were my twin brother. Love you through all eternity and will be by you on the other side one day. Peace brother.
