Born in Oswald, Raleigh County on February 9, 1906, over 104 years ago, Thelma Irene Fenwick Duncan was taken home to be with her God on November 5, 2010. Thelma loved children, teaching and art. For many years she shared her gift of teaching with elementary school students and their families throughout Kanawha County. After she retired, she continued to teach artwork to Village Elementary School students as a guest instructor. Thelma loved cooking, crafts and her church. She was a founding member of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church in South Charleston, where she taught Sunday school, played in the bell choir, participated in dance classes and hosted women’s circles. She often gave crafts and baked goods, including what may have been the state’s best homemade rolls and breads, to neighbors, friends and family. Thelma loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. "Jack" Duncan; her brother, John Fenwick; and her sisters, Genevieve Shafer, Kathleen Cressman, and Margaret Mills. Thelma is survived by her son, John L. Duncan and wife Marsha, of Dunbar; her nephew that she raised and loved as a son, John Fenwick and wife Phyllis, of South Charleston; her grandchildren, Krista Duncan Black and husband Jeff and son Duncan P. McMaster of South Charleston; Cathryn Carena and husband Mario and their children Cailyn and Gea of Dunbar and Torino, Italy; Christy Rife and husband Sam and their children Jacob and Seldon of Hurricane; Debbie Maas and husband Rick and their children Henry and Julia of Indianapolis, IN; David Fenwick and wife Carrie and their sons John, Grant and Abraham of Charleston; Vicki Judy and husband Bobby and their daughters Isabelle and Allison of Harmon; her sister, Virginia Sapp of Daytona Beach, FL; and her special friends, Mary Young of St. Albans and Ruth and Charles Hendrix of South Charleston.
