Macy Allnutt Funeral Service-Eaton Chapel Obituary

Thelma Weiss, 97, of Greeley died on January 28, 2011 at Sterling House. She was born August 7, 1913 in Loveland, Colorado to Charles and Grace Koenig. She attended and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1931, one year after losing her mother, Grace. During her childhood, Thelma spent a great deal of time with her Dad, Charley, fishing the Little South River off the Poudre River. This was an activity in which she excelled and continued to enjoy with her husband, Howard. She attended Ft. Collins Business School and then graduated from Long Beach City College. Thelma married Howard Weiss on January 17, 1937 at the resident of her Aunt and Uncle, Eunice and Harry Koenig of Long Beach, California. Their son, Richard, was born on October 27, 1940 in Pocatello, Idaho where Howard was employed as a watchmaker and aircraft instruments repairman. Thelma and Howard relocated to Greeley in 1944 where they opened their branch of the family jewelry store, Weiss Jewelers. Fred Weiss, Howard’s dad, owned and operated the Weiss’s Time Shop, a watch repair and jewelry store. Thelma and Howard worked together for many years, in the jewelry store. She loved the store and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with the store’s many customers. In 1955, they were honored by the Brand Names Foundation for winning the Retailer of the Year award. This award was presented at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The family joined the Greeley Country Club in 1950. She spent many years playing golf, a game she loved. She was known for her long, almost out-of-control, backswing and her fine short game. She was a member and officer of the GCC Women’s Golf Association. Thelma and Howard traveled tens of thousands of miles in the U.S. and Canada in search of rare and unique antique clocks. Their collection was a constant source of enjoyment for them and for their friends and fellow clock collectors from all over the U.S. She is survived by her son, Rich and wife Marion Weiss of Greeley and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard. Services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, February 5 at the Greeley Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Weld County Humane Society or Hospice of Northern Colorado in care of Allnutt, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
