Mount Vernon - Thomas R. Averett, 90, passed away at Citronelle Convalescent Center. He is survived by his sister, Faye McCord; niece, Deborah Phillips and family; and nephew, Bradley Borden and family. He will be laid to rest at Spring Bank Cemetery, Chatom, AL.

One of the best teachers I ever had. In our small deep southern high school, he taught us critical thinking while teaching our government classes. Unheard of at the time. High school students in Alabama could really use him now. He was a progressive thinker and gave us skills that, if we were paying attention, carried well into our adult lives. Along with the literature I read as a youngster, TR, as we called him, helped to make me politically aware and thoughtful.

I am so sorry to hear of Tom Roy's passing. I am the cousin who sent the notices of the Averett Reunion held in Florida. My grandmother, Mamie Averett Hollister was Tom Roy's aunt. I don't know if he ever knew her as she passed in 1950. I was only 4yrs. old but I do remember Great Uncle Tom Averett. My email is [email protected] if you are interested in communicating.

I am a friend of tom and a long time care giver which makes me feel like family & he will truly be missed , he was kind very giving and all who knew him loved him . He made it a point to get to know all his neighbors who really appreciated him & the things he did to help them and any who asked for his help . Mr Averett taught me to think independently, review and weigh sources of information for myself. His positive influence in my life continues today. He will always be my favorite Theodore High School teacher.
