Connor-Healy Funeral Home - Manchester Obituary

The Honorable Thomas Turley Barry, 76, an attorney and judge of Concord and Rye Beach, NH, passed away on Thursday, August 15, after a five-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.  He was surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Manchester, NH, to James and Rosemary Barry on August 28, 1947, Tom was a proud third-generation New Hampshirite who loved the law, Rye Beach, and most of all, his family.  Tom graduated from Memorial High School in Manchester, followed by St. Anselm College and what is now The Antonin Scalia Law School.

While in law school, Tom worked for U.S. Senator Norris Cotton (R-NH)  in Washington, D.C.  It was there that he met the love of his life, his wife of 53 years, Margaret.  Together, they returned to Tom’s native New Hampshire, where they raised two daughters. Though Tom was deeply devoted to his legal career, he never missed a field hockey game, a musical performance, or a moment with his girls.

Throughout his career, Tom’s commitment to his clients and the pursuit of justice was unwavering.  He believed strongly in using his legal skills to help others, and remained steadfast in his commitment to representing all persons in need.

In addition to the private practice of law, Tom was nominated by Governor Stephen E. Merrill to a part-time seat on the New Hampshire Circuit Court, where he served as a judge for 21 years.  Tom was also active in numerous professional organizations, including as past president of both the Merrimack County Bar Association and the Daniel Webster Inn of Court.

Tom is survived by many family members including his wife, Margaret Goodrich Barry; his daughters, Julia E. Barry and Johanna E. Reiter (Barry) and their husbands, Charlie A. Brickman and Brian J. Reiter; and his brother, The Honorable James J. Barry; and sister-in-law, Kimberlee Barry.

Services: Calling hours are Friday, October 18, 2024, from 4 to 7 PM at Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union Street, Manchester, NH.

An additional calling hour will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 10 to 11 AM in St. Theresa Church, 820 Central Rd, Rye Beach, NH.

The funeral will follow with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 AM in the church.

Burial will proceed in Central Cemetery, Rye, NH.

Not sure what to say?

Mrs. Barry and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. I had the pleasure of meeting Tom at Hillsboro Dist. Court, when he was sitting on the Bench, and I was working in transport for the HCSO, after retirement. I found him to be quite the gentleman, and easy to talk to. He'll surely be missed by all who knew him. God Bless†

Margaret, Julia, and Johanna: We were so upset to learn that Tom had passed away. He was a quality man, a true gentleman. He was the rare human being you truly felt privileged to know. Despite his many professional accomplishments he was a humble man, although the gold bling on the Honda hinted at some subliminal desire not to be so down to earth as to be forgettable. I was so used to seeing him in suit and tie that I did a double-take at softball games when I saw the man in the untucked...

The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is truly sorry for your family's loss. Please contact Jake Meding if we can provide any information or support during this difficult time. He can be reached at [email protected] or 312-854-2627. Thank you.

Margaret, Julia, and Johannah (Lefty)-thanks so much for sharing Tom with the Temple family. He was a man of great humility and integrity. I truly enjoyed all the time I shared with Judge Barry in the courtroom. He earned the tile "Your Honor". More importantly, I cherish our family days at BMS and Dillon Field. Peace and Love to the Barry family!! Charlie, Kelly, Shayne, Rylee and Brier

Can't forget all the good times we had! RIP my friend Paul K Zyla

So sorry to learn of Tom's passing and Sue and I want you to know we are thinking of the Barry Family. I appreciate all the fine legal work he did but mostly appreciate our friendship and fun times at the Saturday morning "Breakfast Club."I know his health issues prevented his recent attendance but we often mention him and we will miss his advice and humor.
