When I was 12 years old, I met Toivi Blatt. I was a 6th grader in Issaquah, WA, and we watched "Escape from Sobibor" in our World History class. I remember so vividly the feel of the bullet in his jaw as I ran my small fingers across it. His story, and the story of all of the surviving members of Sobibor has stuck with me for 25 years. Toivi Blatt visited my students in Puyallup, Washington, year after year. After studying the Holocaust, writing research papers, and viewing the film "Escape from Sobibor," Toivi would grace us with his story. Students were spellbound as they listened, spoke with him personally, felt the bullet still in his jaw, saw him smile and enjoyed his joking with them--always keeping his sense of humor and always with dignity. My condolences to the family. I shall never forget that sad period in his life. His legacy is that everyone should remember what happened to the six million Jews in Europe.
