Collier’s Funeral Home - Saint Ann Obituary

Thomas John Chaney, Bridgeton, MO passed away peacefully Monday, January 25, 2021 at the age of 80, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Tom was born March 19,1940 in Woodward, Oklahoma, son of the late John and Evelyn Chaney. Loving husband of 58 years to Carol Chaney. Loving father to Scott (Laura) Chaney, Suzanne (Christopher) Bangert. Dearest Papa to William Chaney, Katherine, Michael and Gabriella Bangert. Dear brother of Nancy Cation, Bangor, Maine. Dear brother-in- law, uncle, friend to many.

Tom will be remembered by his gentle, kind and patient spirit. He was a 37-year employee of Washington University where he worked as a Senior Research Associate in the Computer Science and Advanced Research Laboratories and was known worldwide as the “discoverer of the glitch”. Tom was a very active member of Arlington United Methodist Church in Bridgeton. Later in life he became a Private Pilot who flew and owned Cessna 172’s. Tom’s greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren.  He taught them to always be curious and to love learning and spent countless hours talking, teaching, loving and helping with scouts.

Arlington United Methodist Church will host a celebration of life at a later date.  In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial donations to Arlington United Methodist Church, 3770 McKelvey Rd. Bridgeton, MO 63044

Not sure what to say?

Carol and Tom were neighbors in Bridgeton. We shared some of the most trying times that life deals. Yet Tom identified the problems and worked towards solutions. As car poolers, during the gas "crisis", we spent time talking about home upkeep, the airport "buy out" our children and faith. We lost touch through time and so Carol I apologize for not extending my sympathy earlier. We lost our spouses to the same condition. God Bless and keep you and yours.

We were neighbors when we were newlyweds, and friends as our children grew. We just learned of Tom’s death today (April 25) and are extremely saddened. Tom was a wonderful man who served on an equity team of parents to promote STEM education; he always had brilliant ideas that worked! You will be missed, dear Tom. Prayers for God’s comfort and peace to Carol, Scott, and Suzanne and their families.

There are so many great memories of my brother in law that I will remember. From bluey pipes, to traveling in a overloaded VW bug from Ohio to Kansas, from pool games, pitch games(with Tom always out bidding everyone),quiet and stimulating talks, hot tea, pop corn from K-mart, driving over the speed limit (even in his convertible), advise given when asked for. There are so many more memories from knowing him for 59 years. Rest In Peace,Tom. You will be missed. Marilyn,Allen,Crystal

We will always cherish the memories of time spent with Uncle Tom. All of those visits to the Science Museum were magical as a child- and as an adult. I’m so thankful Jacoby was able to visit last year and get to know, and learn from, Uncle Tom too. He made the world a better and brighter place, and he will be dearly missed. Sending love and hugs to Aunt Carol, Scott, Suzanne, and your families ❤ ❤

I commuted as an Undergrad to Washington University w Bridgeton Van pool with Tom. He was a brilliant Biomedical Engineer, and inspired me in my current career, in Cancer Research field, at Baylor College of Medicine. My family saw the day when Chaneys 1st joined Arlington Methodist church. Certainly Tom is one of Gods highest Angels! My sincere sympathies and prayers for all the family!

Sincerely
