Not sure what to say?

Always appreciated "Doc" for allowing me to enroll late in his music theory course at (then) CCSN; one of the significant turning points in my academic life. I actually came to "enjoy" the sometimes tedious and time-consuming study of music theory, and I'd willingly present my subsequent MA in musicology as evidence!

An able, patient and witty instructor; somewhere around here is a list of "Doc-isms" compiled by my cohorts during the 4-semesters of music theory under Doc, ca. 1993-95....

Tom was a great musician, weather as conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the "Mighty Sound of the South" marching band, or playing piano with Cliff Acred on bass in Memphis. It was my privilege to have played under his direction, and to have learned more than I can say under his tutelage. Rest in Peace, Tommy!

In Memory of Tom

My thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family. I just learned today about his passing.
I transferred from Miss. State University to Memphis State in 1963 and
was fortunate enough to have played in the MSU marching and concert bands under Tom's direction. I admired him for his astute knowledge of music in all its forms, but especially jazz. I played trombone in the B stage band at MSU and enjoyed playing big band music of the 30s and 40s, with some new arrangements by Tom. He was a top...

There were many things that happened while Tom was at MSU; I had been teaching at Hillcrest H,S.for several years and doing some graduate work at MSU. Tom's influence on my direction will be remembered forever.
Perfect timing for Memphis to have his talent.
Love to his family.

I was a member of the Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) Flag Corps with The Mighty Sound of the South, directed by Dr. Ferguson, in '74-'75. He was a wonderful leader; all of us band members loved him! God have mercy on his soul!

Sorry I couldn't be there today to honor Tom. He was a patient at our dental office and we all enjoyed seeing him every appointment! We were sadden when it was no longer possible for Tom to make the trek across town for his appointments. He was so dedicated.Tom always had a smile for us and we will continue to miss seeing him.

A great man who mentored me in grad school at Memphis. So saddened by this loss. Brains, talent and a great sense of humor. Greatly missed.

My prayers are with the family and I know that these past 4 years have been very difficult. I believe he is with God and at Peace. Sarah Walker

Great man and the best teacher I ever had
