He Made His Calls
Thomas Fitzpatrick briefly dated a woman named Marianne during his days at Boston College. Perhaps her name was Maryanne, or Mary Ann. It escapes the memory of his real Marianne, the one who lived around the corner when they were children in the Bronx, who was his steady girl in high school and to whom he wrote each day during their separation. She was the one he married in 1994, who kept their home in Tuckahoe, N.Y., and bore the two children he adored, Brendan and Caralyn.

"When we finally got married, everyone teased us about how long it took," said Mrs. Fitzpatrick.

The lengthy courtship was consistent with the 35-year-old Mr. Fitzpatrick's patient, methodical approach to his work as a bond salesman and financial adviser at Sandler O'Neill & Partners. Mr. Fitzpatrick made daily calls to clients from his office on the 104th Floor of the south tower. After the first hijacked jetliner hit the north tower, he was making the calls again, assuring them he was in no danger. "I never met a more thorough financial adviser," said Thomas Wirth, a longtime client.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 1, 2001.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, 35, of Tuckahoe, was at work as associate director at Sandler O'Neill and Partners on the 104th Floor of Tower 2 on September 11. He was leaving for a convention that afternoon, but now he will never come home to his wife of 7 years, Marianne and his two children, Brendan 2 1/2 and Caralyn 6 months. Thomas met Marianne while he was attending Fordham Prep high school in the Bronx and they have been together ever since. He graduated from Boston College School of Management in 1987 and received his MBA from Fordham University. He had worked at Sandler O'Neill for almost ten years and truly liked the challenge of his job. He genuinely was interested in his clients and always tried to do his best for them.

He was always up for trying new things and was looking forward to his job as father of two. He loved spending time with his son and couldn't wait to teach him how to play golf. Daddy's little girl was often in his arms, they were quite taken with each other. His family will miss his smiling face, usually telling a corny joke in his distinctive voice and him laughing at himself. They will also miss his sense of adventure, though he has begun his own new journey.

Not sure what to say?

Remembering Thomas on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Thomas Fitzpatrick is on the new memorial located in Bullard, TX at The Brook Hill School's American Freedom Museum. I am the 6/7 grade Humanities teacher and recently took my students to the newest exhibit to honor the victims of 9-11. I asked the students to find a name and remember it so we could pray for the families today. I chose a name too. It was Thomas James Fitzpatrick. Just wanted you to know I am praying for you all. I would also like to invite you to the dedication to see...

Thomas was a great guy. I thought of him as a special guy who lived just down the block. He kept pretty busy with his family and I really liked that. I looked up to him because he had it going. Maybe it kept me going. We'll chat again one day brother.

We miss you

I have known Thomas' son Brendan since I was a little girl in elementary school. Seeing him recently, I just wanted to say that Brendan has grown up to be a wonderful gentleman and a person that his father would be proud of. Much love to the Fitzpatrick family

My family and I visited the 9/11 museum and memorial yesterday....we are the Fitzpatrick Family from the UK...we crossed the street and walked over to the south tower pool and I rested my hands on the edge to look and to my astonishment my hand was resting on Thomas' name!...we were deeply moved and staggered by this which made our whole reflection and visit more moving and poignant...we are deeply sorry for your lost and now feel an even more personal connection to those tragic...

Dear Family and friends of Thomas, I never knew him but reading his quest book know I would of really liked him. I am so very sorry for your loss and will keep you and all the families of our fallen 9/11 friends in my prayers. May your memories keep you strong. RIP Thomas.
