I was fortunate enough to know Dr. Tom for almost half of my life and I consider myself a better person for that very reason. We met and became instant friends within a week of his first moving to Birmingham. He has been the older brother I never had, the nonjudgemental friend I needed and, in many ways, a mentor. I will miss him dearly.
