Not sure what to say?

Dear Mrs. Griess: I extend to you my deepest sympathy on the passing of General Griess. I shall always treasure his mentorship and the warm hospitality you and he extended to us during our years at West Point. To have served under him was a great honor. At this time of your deep loss, please receive a measure of comfort to know that his legacy lives on in the many lives that he shaped.

Dear Betty, Tom Jr., & Ann:
It was wonderful being at the Memorial Service for General Griess and sharing in the celebration of the life and service of a wonderful man. We offer our thanks to you and your family for your service to the Country and the Army. General Griess was a great soldier and leader and our memories of serving together will always be happy and inspiring. God bless you all. Bill and Pat Stofft

Dear Mrs. Griess,

We will always remember with great fondness the many kindnesses you and General Griess showed us during our years in the Department of History. We are saddened by his death and extend our sincere sympathy and condolonces. You both touched us deeply.

All the very best,

Tom Griess accomplished in life what few ever manage: he left an indelible legacy for history at USMA and in the Army, a legacy that exists not only in his own magnificent accomplishments but in those of the host of historians who were fortunate enough to have had a chance to serve under him.

Dear Mrs. Griess, Mary Beth and I will always have the fondest memories of our experiences with you both, and of the mentorship of your husband. To me he always was the finest example of what an officer, a gentleman, and a historian should be. We will miss him terribly. VR JSB, CMH

Mary and I send our condolences to Betty Griess and the Griess family. General Griess's contribution to officer education is a lasting contribution to the Army. His influence goes far beyond what can be written about him, and serving with him in the Department of History was an immense privilege.

The Army and the Nation owe much to Tom Griess for his great contribution to the education of thousands of cadets.
Anne joins me in sending our heartfelt sympathy to Betty and the family.

Dear Mrs. Griess,

Our hearts go out to you and your children, and we will keep you in our prayers. We have such fond memories of our years at West Point, and you and General Griess were a great part of that. Together you made teaching in the Department of History a special joy.

Marigold and Jim

Mrs. Griess, please accept our heartfelt condolences. General Griess was a soldier, a scholar, a boss, and a friend. He was a model of all of these. It was a honor to know him in each capacity.
