Not sure what to say?

Yesterday I visited our granddaughter, Annlyn Ackerly Zinke, in her dorm room at Wake Forest. I was moved as I discovered that her 4th floor window overlooks the Hearn Plaza -- the lawn and trees and landscaping that serves as the center of the campus. I told Annlyn about my friendship with Tom, his leadership in the student body of BSC, and his exemplary professional work bringing together the University and the City of Winston-Salem for the the betterment of both and the people of NC....

To Thomas, Lindsey, & Will. We have just learned of the death of your father. We express our deepest sympathy. We remenber very vividly the times we spent together in Williamsburg as friends and neighbors. Your Dad was a very caring and loving father. We know you will miss him greatly.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.

I had the honor, indelibly impressed upon my memory and heart, of knowing President Hearn. During my junior and senior years at Wake, I got to know him as we planned and prepared for the 1988 Debate between Bush and Dukakis. I found him to be a deeply caring, approachable and thoughtful man and the experience is one of the greatest I took from four great years. I won't ever forget him stopping on the quad during the spring semester of my senior year and purhcasing a fundraiser's Wake...

Dear Hearn Family:
I am saddened to learn that one of the great members of the Wake Forest family is no longer physically with us. He will remain in our thoughts and rememberances of Wake Forest as long as the University exists.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom when he met the Alumni Council at Sea Island at the beginning of his presidency. Later I met him a number of times including in my home town of Wake Forest at a "Return to the Old Campus" and when he visited my home in...

To the Hearn family,
Although I didn't know Mr. Hearn, he was a friend of my late father's, Pat W. Preston who graduated, coached, & was a former athletic director at WFU. My condolences to all the family as I know how hard it is to lose a father but it's comforting that so many people loved and respected him.

Dear family and friends:
I am so sorry for your loss. i leave my deepest condolences. For I, the Lord your God, take you by the right hand; I say to you, Do not fear; it is I who will help you. Isaiah 41:13

I am sorry for your great loss. In times such as these I always find the Holy Scriptures to be comforting. Psalms 55:22 says, "Throw your burden upon God himself, and he himself will sustain you. Never will he allow the righteous one to totter." I hope you find comfort in your time of sorrow. You have my deepest sympathy.

We only met Dr. Hearn a few times while we were on the parents council, yet we feel like we have lost a long time close friend. We loved listening to him speak at our meetings. He had that 'fatherly' way about him that made you feel everything was fine, and things were even going to get better. They say that a measure of one's success is not by how much money you made, nor even by how many people attend you funeral...but rather how many cry when they hear of your passing. If that is the...
