I always remember with a smile the first time I met Tom. He came to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. to talk with me about volunteering. (Ruth is a docent at the museum.) We talked about the museum's mission, volunteer duties, and why he was interested in volunteering with us. In 1989 I married into the Herman clan. It was, needless to say, a very daunting experience. The Herman family are truly a clan in every sense of the word. Their closeness,inside jokes and extremely designated roles were entirely foreign to me. I did not come from a family with any of these endearing qualities.
