Groton - Thomas J. Hess Sr., 80, of Groton, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born in Norwalk, on Nov. 29, 1932, the son of Jacob and Dorothy (Statham) Hess.
Tom was married to Rose M. Gordon for 59 years.
Tom served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and retired from Pfizer in 1992, where he had worked as a chemical operator and a sheet metal worker.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Thomas J. Hess Jr. and Velda of South Windham, Edwin Hess and Elaine of Uncasville, and Andrew Hess and Suzanne of Preston. He is also survived by his brothers, William and Alfred Hess of Florida; and his sisters, Barbara Cain of Arizona, Emily Levi of Tennessee, Sandra Scarpa and Faith Mattern, both of Florida; as well as nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian Hawes and Helen Hess.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment with military honors will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.
