IDEN, Thomas C., M.D., 91, of Berryville, Va., died April 2, 2011 in Winchester. Tom Iden was born in Berryville, Va., on September 21, 1919, the son of Jane and Dr. Carroll Iden. Dr. Tom graduated Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va., in 1937. He graduated Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., in 1941. In 1944, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia as a Doctor of Medicine and was commissioned a Lt., J.G. in the U.S. Navy. He completed his internship at the United States Naval Hospital in Oak Knoll, Calif., in 1945, and his residency at Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke, Va., in 1947. That same year, he returned home to Berryville, where he practiced family medicine until his retirement in 1999. He was a charter fellow and diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Tom served in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as Commander (MC). During World War II, he served as ship's doctor aboard the U.S.S. Tappahannock. He worked as a physician at the U.S. Naval Gun Factory during the Korean Conflict. During his military service, he earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Battle Star, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the China Service Medal. From 1973 through 1983, Dr. Tom was a member of the Virginia State Board of Health, serving for two of those years as that Board's president. Dr. Tom married the love of his life, the former Mae Oglesby Tench, with whom he spent 64 happily married years until her death in early 2009. Surviving are his daughter, Jean Larew Biaett and her husband, D. H. Biaett III, of Williamsburg, Va.; three sons, Thomas Carroll Iden Jr. and his wife, Susan H. Iden, of Winchester, Va., John Conway Iden of Dayton, Va., and Alexander Riddick Iden and his wife, Stacey M. Iden, of Winchester, Va.; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Iden Biaett Coleman, D. H. Biaett IV, Mayanne Larew Biaett Thomas, Thomas C. Iden III, M.D., Amy Christina Iden, Morgan Brittany Boxwell, Emily Larew Iden and Samuel Alexander Iden; and two great-grandchildren, Robert Stewart Coleman and Sarah Elizabeth Coleman. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville, with Rev. William K. Dawson officiating.
