THOMAS KEMPNER Obituary

KEMPNER--Thomas Lenox,

Sr., 91, Investment Banker Thomas Lenox Kempner Sr., loving husband of Ann Bernhard Kempner, proud father of Thomas Jr., Adeline, and James, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather, died peacefully at New York- Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center on Tuesday, October 9th. He was 91 years old. Mr. Kempner was the grandson of Carl M. Loeb, the founder of Carl M. Loeb & Co, which later became Loeb Rhoades & Co., one of the iconic Wall Street brokerage and banking firms. Mr. Kempner began his business career working for his grandfather in September 1950, after distinguished service in the U.S. Navy. He became a General Partner in January 1957. Mr. Kempner then became Chairman and CEO of Loeb Holding Corporation after Loeb Rhoades & Co., merged into Shearson/American Express. During an esteemed banking business career, Mr. Kempner served on many public and private company boards. Mr. Kcmpner was born in Pittsburgh and was the son of Alan Kempner and Margaret Loeb Kempner. Alan was an executive with the publishing company of Farrar & Strauss. Mr. Kempner was a graduate of the Choate School and Yale University, where he was elected to and was a member of both the scientific Honor Society, Sigma Xi, and the engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi. He was a generous supporter of Choate and Yale, and recently with his son Thomas Jr., endowed a chair in computer sciences in the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. He was also a long-term supporter and committed participant in the activities of CATO Institute, Manhattan Institute and Club for Growth.
