Not sure what to say?

Dear Barbara,

I am so sorry to read of Tom's death. It was a shock in that I was looking online for Judith, and Tom's memorial came up. Especially since it has been only a few weeks since he died, it was a disquieting discovery. I so remember the stories of your "courtship" and then wonderful mariage and then children, especially Jon who was such a beautiful toddler and then a post-doc, I think, at Stanford. It has been years since we have been in touch, but tonight it seems...

Thank you, Judi, for the lovely tribute to our Tom. You certainly did capture the essence of Tom.

Tom Mattingly was a great man. He was my brother-in-law and all his Minneapolis family loved him. When Tom and my only sister married I was furious at him for "taking" her out east to establish a life. But a bond emerged through many memorable visits to Minneapolis and Charlotte. Sitting on their deck in Charlotte each of us got morning time with Tom. We'd have coffee for hours. Arguing often and stopping me in mid-sentence, knowing this man's depth and intellect would swamp me and there would...

Dee - thank you for the kind words. I know he valued you and Bill. I always remember fondly your visits to our house and the exciting perspective and stories you shared.

Thank you,
Sarah

I am so saddened to hear the news of Tom Mattingly's passing. I have such fond memories of visiting Tom & Barbara in Charlotte with my husband (Tom's grad student) and my son. So many delightful conversations over the years on travel and life - frequently laced with humor. All the stories so very interesting. My thoughts are with you Barbara.

I was sad to learn of Dr. Mattingly's passing. I always appreciated his warmth and pleasantness whenever I saw him on visits to my Dad in the Chemistry Department at UNCC, and I so appreciated being able to spend time with him when you both came to Mom and Dad's last anniversary celebration the summer before Dad's death in Jan. 2010. It is so difficult to lose those we love, and I pray all of you who loved your Tom so will find true comfort and deep peace as time allows you to reflect on...

My Lost Love
I have only just lost you
the pain is hard to bear
I must go through life knowing you're not there
can some one explain to me why you had to go
I really want to know
I sit here and remember all the lovely times we shared
the talks the laughter
the music you delighted in
the love of the family you cherished
even the tears

I am told the pain will ease in time
and I...
