Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood Obituary

Thomas J. “Tom” Mountcastle, age 79 of Elwood, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2024 at Ascension-St. Vincent Carmel Hospital after a brief illness and a long battle with several health issues.  He was born Oct. 12, 1945 in Anderson, the son of Robert R. and Lucille E. (Wilson) Mountcastle.  Tom married Carolyn J. (McPhearson) on Nov. 9, 1963, and they shared over 57 years of marriage together before her passing in 2021.  Tom retired in 1998 as the Crew Chief at the Elwood Wastewater treatment plant where he worked for 15 years for the City of Elwood.  Prior to that, he worked at Ex-Cello (Airfoil Textron) for 25 years as a setup man.

Tom enjoyed spending time outdoors - fishing and hunting.  He especially loved spending time boating at Lake Bruce.  Tom was an accomplished fisherman and had received numerous trophies through the years.  In his free time, he enjoyed listening to Elvis music, spending time with his family, and caring for his dog and buddy, “Rudy”.  Tom’s family is comforted knowing he has been reunited with Carolyn.

Tom’s family includes his daughter, Lori (husband David) Nutt of Elwood; son, Robert G. Mountcastle (partner Bruce Richardson) of Elwood; 3 siblings, Carolyn Ehman of Elwood, Ruth Clingerman of Huntington, and Ronald (wife Dot) Mountcastle of Mitchell; 2 grandsons, Larry Nutt (wife Gretchen) of Richmond, VA and Jacob Nutt (Halie Jackson) of New Palestine; great-granddaughter, Esther Syverud-Nutt; sister-in-law, Alice Mountcastle of Elwood; and several more nieces and nephews.  Tom was preceded in death by both his parents; wife, Carolyn Mountcastle; and 3 siblings, Bobby Mountcastle, Bennie Mountcastle, and Brenda Harris.

Tom’s wish was to have cremation followed by a graveside service at a later date in the Elwood City Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Elwood Animal Shelter through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
