Age 90 of Wanamassa
Thomas F. Murtha 90 of Wanamassa, passed away Friday Nov. 24 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Rahway, Tom graduated from Rahway HS where he was elected to the Rahway HS Athletic Hall of Fame. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Later he moved to Elizabeth and with his wife Maureen came to Wanamassa in 1962. Tom was an Associate Professor of Physical Education at Monmouth College, West Long Branch from 1961-1994, also an Assistant Men's basketball coach from '61-'62 and the Dean of Students from 1963-1969. He was a member of national business Fraternity "Delta Sigma Pi" and B.P.O.Elks #128, Asbury Park. Tom received his Bachelor's degree from Long Island Univ. and his Master's degree from Kean College and was always active with the Monmouth County Red Cross.
Tom was predeceased by his beloved wife Maureen J. (Hanley) Murtha in 2003 and by his 4 siblings; Margaret, Patrick, Mary and Peter. Surviving are his 6 sons and their spouses; Kevin (Carlyn) Murtha of Lakewood, Fredrick Murtha of Little Egg Harbor, Patrick Murtha of Hammonton, Mark (Ann) Murtha of Bordentown, Shawn (Tricia) Murtha of Brick , Robert (Tina) Murtha of St. Louis, Mo. and 2 daughters; Kathleen (Bob) Ivey of Brick and Maureen (William) Raleigh of Georgetown, Tx. and 7 grandchildren; Mary Ann, Meghan, Casey, Carson, Thomas, Colin and and Benjamin.
Visitation will be on Wednesday Nov. 29 from 3-7pm in Buckley Funeral Home 509 Second Ave. Asbury Park NJ 07712. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Asbury Ave. Asbury Park. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Neptune.
