May 28, 1965 – September 13, 2025Born in Grand Rapids, MI on May 28,1965 as the third of four children to Edward and Sharon Start, Tom lived what he often called an "average life" in the most extraordinary way. He liked referring to life this side of heaven as the "scenic route home", and it was...

Not sure what to say?

I grew up next to Tom on Colorado Street. Great memories growing up of Kick the can, basketball in the driveway, and my dog "lifting his leg" on Ed´s lunch. Tom was always working on his Cadillac convertible and driving it in the Holly Hock parade (cool Colorado Kids) The Starts were great neighbors and Tom was an amazing man. We talked a few years ago and his faith just radiated out from him. Thank you Tom for making an impact on this scenic drive. Now it´s time to dance. With Love. The...

Tom was my cousin Sharon and Eds son. I remember him coming to the paddleball pole when we were visiting at My Aunt Katherine LaGrand's cottage. he came with his brother Dirk. I also chatted with him at his mother's funeral luncheon. He indicated he had trouble breathing with any significant movement. So I was happy to hear about the heart transplant. Hard to hear the heart transplant did not ultimately work out and was not in God's will for him to fully recover from it.

Tom was my big cousin growing up-someone I literally looked up to. From the time I remember him (when he was likely a young teenager) Tom was a person who would care for little people like me. Over a lifetime of seeing Tom mature into a man, it was clear that he was a person who delighted in others and treated others with care and gentleness. He also had cool cars. It is hard to bring Tom to mind without seeing him smiling. Tom was a good and faithful man. I lament and mourn with his...

I, normally do not do this, because i did not know your husband, father, son, but i had to comment on the statement about Abraham, and the grains of sand. All i can say is "WOW", i never thought of it that way. These words will live on for sure. I hope you find peace, and comfort through our Lord in the days ahead. But, please always remember you will see him again someday. Whole.

Tom was a remarkable soul, brimming with faith, family, and a contagious joy that was shared with everyone around him. His humor had a unique way of putting people at ease. Always ready to lend a hand or share a conversation, Tom connects deeply with friends, acquaintances, and even strangers who crossed his path. When we bought our fixer-upper home, Tom gave up his weekend to work on leaky faucets, paint walls, and fix appliances-skills I could only admire from the sidelines! His character...

Such great memories of Tom. Going through College together, meeting our wives, having children. Tom was such a reliable friend and good person. Tom's enthusiasm for life and love of family was everything. I always admired Tom's closeness with the Lord. In these sad days his strong faith gives me comfort because I know I will see him again in Heaven. Love you Tom

what a beautiful thought: taking the "scenic way" home. Tom sounds like a wonderful man to have known!
