I had the privilege of accompanying Tom many times to doctor visits, bank, store, etc. He was unfailingly cheerful, in spite of debilitating pain in his back and legs. He treated everybody like they were his best friend, calling all, including doctors, by their first name. He was genuinely interested in others’ modest accomplishments, never mentioning his own stellar prominence.
