Hawthorne Funeral Home - Mount Vernon Obituary

Thomas F. “Tom” Shane
Tom was born January 31, 1931 in Everett, WA to Daniel and Vernita (Liggett) Shane; he passed away at his home with his family by his side on August 28, 2020.  Tom attended Mount Vernon schools until graduating from MVHS in 1949.  He attended WSC (now WSU) for three years until joining the US Army in 1952 to serve in Korea.  Upon his return home he started his farming lifestyle.  Tom has been apart of various farming organizations throughout his career.  He served as a planning commissioner and was a Dike District Commissioner for 42 years.  Tom loved hunting and fishing.  He loved playing Santa.  He had a “bigger than life” personality.  Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Fay; children: Cristina (Brian) Waltner and Tom, Jr (Carrie) Shane; 4 perfect grandchildren: Mari, Daniel, Sophia and Eddie; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and favorite cousin, Pat.  A private family graveside will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery.  A very special “Thank you” to Hospice of the Northwest and the caregivers that helped in his last days.  We would also like to thank Fr. Tom McMichael and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for their care and visits with Tom.  Memorials may be made in Tom’s name to Hospice of the Northwest or charity of your choice.

Not sure what to say?

deepest condolences i was an employee for years

...my condolences to friends and family of Mr. Shane

...he gave me my first "real" job...picking berries. the $57 and $73 I made for 2 seasons probably didn't even cover my lunches...but the real life experiences were priceless...

....he provided me and many others our first jet plane ride...if ya stuck out a season ya got to go. i think a 707 (or 727) from Vancouver ...what a wonderful, unique and thoughtful reward. never to be forgotten, kinda like the first car ride...

One of Tom's perfect grandchildren, Sophia Shane, raising the flag in honor of grandpa today on Labor Day.

Tom gave me what was likely one of the most important jobs in my young life at the time. I worked three summers at Shane farms loading and driving truck and working in the cold storage with their cauliflower and broccoli harvests and sales. I often got to work 20 hours in a day and frequently had over 100 hours each week. It was hard work, however we had a great team and lots of fun. I remember that Faye and apparently Tom too, trusted me to take young Tommy On a few long truck deliveries...

You be there every day to come see me and others. Your sense of humor was AWESOME! You were ALWAYS VERY KIND❤ I always LOVED our conversation you will DEFINITELY BE MISSED.. Today I will play the song we always put on jukebox you loved.. I'll Miss you and I'm sure there are bartenders that will be shredding a tear. You were DEFINITELY ONE OF A KIND❤ To his Wife Faye and family I'm sending prayers & LOVE R.I.P MY FRIEND

I have so missed Tom this past year coming around... Loved his sense of humor.... An awesome guy... Bruce always admired him also... So sorry for the families loss... Sending love & prayers to you & family Faye.....He will be so missed by so many of us...

We shall meet, but we shall miss him,
There will be the vacant chair,
But though we no more possess him,
Still our hearts his memory bear.
But a while ago we gathered,
Friendship beaming in each eye,
Now the golden cord is severed,
He has passed to realms on high.
