Thomas E. Turpin
Thomas Edward Turpin, passed into Eternal Life Aug. 23, 2006.
Tom was born in Lynchburg on Oct. 27, 1923 to the late John (Jack) and Bessie Turpin.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Annie, Edna, Bessie, Elaine and Lucille; three brothers, Howard, George, and John Jr.
Tom was reared in Lynchburg at 301 Chambers Street, Dearington; graduated from Dunbar High School, and was a member of the Dunbar Poet's football team. He attended Virginia State College, Petersburg, and before graduating was inducted into the United States Army during World War II. Tom returned to Virginia State after his discharge from the service, completed his studies in Industrial Arts, became a faculty member at Virginia State College and taught 14 years as a Vocational Education Instructor. He left Virginia State to become an educator for the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO). In the context of his work, he traveled from both domestic and foreign. It was during this period that he met Karin. Upon retiring from the ILO, Tom and Karin moved to Lynchburg where they joined Jackson Street UM Church. He became a member of the Board of Trustees and chairman of the Finance Committee and was also an active member of the United Methodist Men.
The Georgetown Forest Community of Homeowners embraced his expertise in planning and developing the community standards. Furthermore, he was an enthusiastic member of the Senior Golfers of Virginia.
Tom Turpin is survived by his wife Karin; four stepchildren, Natascha Gaillard (Michael), Ralph Jousson, Frank Gygli (Corine), and daughter-in-law, Linda Subayi; ten grandchildren, Nohemie, Anais, Fanny, Thomas, Cedric, Yann, Elodie, Ludovic, all of Geneva, Switzerland; Andréa, and Jeremiah, Decatur, Ill.; two god-grandchildren, Kashana Dillard and Jaleel Burrell, Lynchburg. His nieces and nephews include: Carmen Turpin (Richard Beebe); nephews, Beverly Sorrell (Jeannette), John Turpin, III (Blanca), Michael Turpin, Kyle Turpin. In addition, cousins, Fanny and Gloria Jones, Shirley Turpin-Wamsley, Lynchburg, Courtney Nicholas, Fork Union; numerous grand and great-grand nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends from all over the world.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006 at Jackson Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Butler officiating.
