Not sure what to say?

Tom was an absolute inspiration to the people who were lucky enough to study with him. His exams are the stuff of legends (so hard that only a few students could answer more than a third of the questions). It was not unusual to see him and Jan on campus at midnight while he prepared for his next day. He had a laugh that was heartfelt and instantly recognizable. Even after graduation, he stayed in touch with his students and was always cheering them on and forwarding very long, very technical...

Dear Megan and Josue, I am so sad to hear about your Father's passing. This is a wonderful tribute to him. I run the Geological Society of Nevada and had the pleasure of seeing or talking to him several times a year. What a wonderful person he was. I will publish his obituary in our newsletter this month in case some of his colleagues and students are unaware that he passed away. If you'd like a copy, please send me your email. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Best...

I always enjoyed spending time in the field with Tom Westervelt in the 1990s and early 2000s. I learned a great deal of San Juan Mountains geology from him. I am sorry to learn of his passing and send my condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

It was a real good experience to read your beautiful Dad's obit. Thank you for letting us know about his amazing life and contributions. Your choice of photos is a delight to my spirit.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo of Grandpa and Grandson! I didn't know either one but, it made me smile and made me glad I got to meet both! Our family has also had many get adventures like Thomas! And we will take your families advice and enjoy many more adventures too! God speed to your family and all your future adventures as well!

His classes were ten times harder than other classes and needless to say never dull. He had high expectations and a bit of a twisted sense of humor in seeing how much he could make us suffer. From 3-4 hour exams for a regular test, to field days in questionable terrain. He was always slightly tormented but I think that was just a...
