Fairfield, Thornton Carter "Carter" Age 42 of Wayzata, beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, Marine, passed away on August 21st after an eight year battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Carter's many passions included music, mountains and oceans, long motorcycle rides, friendships, and his dog Kirby. Preceded in death by Thomas H. Fairfield. Survived by Marcia and John Stout, Lindsay and Michael Herbert (Parker, John), Hubbard and Johanna Stout (Sophie, John), Molly and Trey Whipple (Alec, John), Richard Spurzem and Barbara Fairfield. After distinguished service in the US Marine Corps, Carter attended the University of South Florida. His love of music and guitar then lead him to a successful marketing career at EMI Records. Carter was a true gentleman, a soulful spirit and an avid reader. Carter taught us many things; most importantly to appreciate life and to live each day to the fullest. His strong will to live and desire to help others lead Carter to courageously undertake extensive experimental cancer treatments. Through his life, he inspired people to understand the difference between never giving up and acceptance. A Minnesota Twins fan to the end... Touch ‘em all Cartmo! Deep gratitude to Pam and Laura from Allina Hospice, Tim Hall, Nicky Cady, Dr. PJ Flynn, and Carter's friends at the Minnetonka Mud. A celebration of Carter's life will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 1:30pm at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 (www.lls.org) or Allina Home Care Hospice and Palliative Care, Attention: Foundation, 1055 Westgate Drive, Suite 100, St. Paul, MN 55114.

Carter - I remember the days of parties, the lake and life back in Minnetonka so many years ago. We had many good days and nights back then learning how to grow up. It is special to me to find you playing guitar like I still do (remember the Meandering Sno-cones Band???) and that music connects us now. I wish we'd jammed on Santana together or Larry Carlton style from Steely Dan's Josie. A missed opportunity now and that is truly sad. My condolences to your family. David

Carter,
The mere thought of you will always bring a smile to my face. I am so grateful that we reconnected a few years ago through massage therapy. It was an honor to work with you. I will never forget our crazy conversations, our silences... so full of intent and the wild way your fingertips felt. I will miss your voice and your heartfelt hugs. Thank you for letting me help you and thank you so much for helping me. You are a man whose energy will continue to draw...

Just heard about Carter's death from my father and mother. I knew Carter briefly from Saint Mary's hospital and Minneapolis West. He was a good soul. I'll never forget he was a big fan of Larry Carlton's too.

Family and Friends of Carter,
My heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. I was Carter's advisor from our Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity days back in the 1980's at the Univ. of South Florida and although our paths haven't crossed since then, I have often thought of him. I was told via the grapevine that he had cancer, but never knew it was a blood cancer and so severe. You see, I was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2003 and am in remission now. I know the effects of chemo and similar...

I was stunned when I heard about Carter’s passing…I am still deeply saddened. He was a good friend and a great influence on the people around him. I knew him in college, at the University of South Florida as the President of the ATO fraternity. I cannot believe how many years got between us. He was always so happy and filled with life. He was a natural leader; people seemed to gravitate toward him. They looked to him for camaraderie, inspiration, and laughter. As a volunteer and mentor...

A wave of saddness came over me when I read about Carter.
And another wave of warmth and peace reading all the lovely tributes about the Carter we all knew.
My heartfelt sympathy to his friends and family. Kirby too.

There are people you cross paths with in your life that, no matter how brief, make an everlasting impact. Carter was one of these people. He had a way of making you feel important... I'll never forget being the "little kid up the block" (Hooper), being asked over and feeling so cool because I was with Carter, who treated me like one of the big kids. I smiled when I read that he worked for EMI, it was from being with him that I convinced my parents to get me my first "Rock"...

Dear Marcia, Lindsay and family:
I am so sorry you lost your beautiful son and brother. My heart aches for you. Carter was such a special, wonderful person.
I loved the way he could talk to anyone about his take on the world. He left his mark on so many hearts. Thank you for giving him to us, Marcia, if only for a while. It helps me to know that we will all be together again someday. God Bless and keep you. Claudia Lacy
