Thurman was born near where my own mother was born, near Magazine in Logan County, and their birth years weren’t very far apart. Like my Dad, Thurman enlisted in the WW2 Navy and then made a career of it. In the 1980s, Thurman Jordan worked as a volunteer in efforts directed by Doug James to survey commercial pine forests in southeast Arkansas for endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. It was hot, sweaty, tick-filled, with lots of hacking through underbrush with machetes. Thurman thrived on it....
