Obituary

Most of Timothy D. Watkins' life centered around his church. He graduated from Calvary Baptist High School, on the grounds of his pastor-father's church. He worked with children at a Christian camp and sang with a worship group. "He had a servant's heart," said Rob Watkins, pastor at Calvary Baptist Church Yucca Valley, of his son. "He was very much a help at our church." Watkins, 24, of San Bernardino, Calif., was killed Oct. 15 in Ramadi by a roadside bomb. He graduated high school in 1999 and was assigned to Fort Benning. His son was known and respected by soldiers in Iraq, said his father. He was a mentor to some, a friend to many. "On Sunday mornings, when guys weren't out on a mission, he'd round up anybody that wasn't on a mission and take them to church with him," his father said. Another of his passions was learning to fly, prompting him to decide to join the military, Rob Watkins said. He had wanted to fly helicopters. In August, Watkins spent two weeks at his parents' home after serving for seven months in Iraq. "He was great," said the elder Watkins. "He was in excellent spirits. He always was."

Not sure what to say?

Tim, I think about you daily. Your brief time in my life still impacts me incredibly. I still remember sitting out in the dark at night at Ironwood crying my eyes out as you comforted me. Your ability to connect with anyone and everyone has always been a drive in my life to also give everyone a chance before judgment. I'll never forget the last time we spoke over the phone as you told me you were heading to Iraq. Thank you for being the inspiring older brother I never had. I'm blessed to have...

Today, 24 May, 2018 the military veterans of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in Springfield, Virginia and St. Louis, Missouri honored the lives of service members who had fallen is combat since 11 September, 2001. We wore badges with the names of the fallen and which operation they had participated in. I had the honor of wearing Timothy's badge along with those of his squad mates, Army Spc. Jeffrey W. Corban, 30, Elkhart, Ind.; and Army Spc. Richard A. Hardy, 24,...

"I met Tim on a work Detail when we were in Iraq about 3 months into our tour. We found we had much in common, with where we were from in California, our faith in Jesus Christ, and both wanting to go into the ministry once we got out of the Army. My walk with God really had dissipated at that time with being in a Combat MOS and just "going with the flow" of other soldiers. I never thought Christian could live the life he should in that type of enviroment, until Tim and my path crossed that...

Thinking about Tim today. He was a wonderful guy, and he is missed and loved much.

Dear Watkins Family and Friends:
I once sent a letter with some pictures a long time ago, shortly after Tim left. I thought I'd post a few memories here. I was in basic and airborne school with Tim. One memory that stands out is Tim calling up the local churches and interviewing the pastors. He was the one that found a church for James Shaw and I and that's where I subsequently met my wife lovely wife. So that is one impact I can thank him for, that will last a lifetime. Another...
