Timothy Hartrey

Saginaw, MI

Tim was born in Chingford, a town in east London, England, to Margaret and William Hartrey. His childhood was shared with his two brothers, Steven and Giles Hartrey. He became a citizen of The United States, but he was always a Brit at heart. His soft-spoken English accent endured, even after 33 years of living in America.

Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Hatfield Polytechnic in Hertfordshire UK. Upon graduating he began his journey in the automotive industry. His career began at Jaguar Cars in Coventry England.  While working for the Jag he went on a desert test trip to Phoenix Arizona where he met the love of his life Amy Sanders. Amy moved to be near Tim and they were married on a beautiful spring day in Warwick, England. While still living in the UK Tim and Amy were blessed with two beautiful children, twins, Lindsey and Duncan.

The next chapter of his life was to take place in the United States. He moved to Michigan in 1990 to begin work for AC Delco, a part of General Motors. He continued to work for General Motors for the next 33 years, his final position as a Senior Safety Engineer.

Tim loved all things relating to motorcycles and cars. In his younger days he rode motocross enduros, and he had an encyclopedic knowledge of automobiles. If anyone had a question about their vehicles Tim was the one they called. He also had a great love for the outdoors. As a family they took many memorable trips to Quebec and New Hampshire where they camped, hiked and kayaked. When the twins moved out, Tim and Amy continued their love of the outdoors and became avid cyclists. They cycled thousands of miles side by side. Tim’s passion for the outdoors and active lifestyle endures in his children, who now live in Washington State and carry on his love of the outdoors and of all things that are beautiful in nature.

Tim had a quiet wit and personality that left a mark on all that knew and loved him. He cared deeply for his family above all else and was a steady and peaceful husband and father.

He is survived by: Amy Hartrey (wife), Lindsey Brinklow (daughter), Duncan Hartrey (son), Steven Hartrey (brother), Giles Hartrey (brother), Aaron Brinklow (son-in-law), Heather Kranz (daughter-in-law), Mary & Jim Bunn (sister and brother-in-law), Linda Sanders & Larry Wheeler (sister and brother-in-law).

A private memorial will be held by his immediate family. In Lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be sent to: The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy www.railstotrails.org click on the donate button on upper right.

Not sure what to say?

My deepest condolences to Tim's Family in this sudden loss. I worked with Tim for 4 years and I've always greatly appreciated his kindness, his politeness and his immeasurable technical knowledge. He taught me what safety is, guided me through the complexity of our job and always had time to suggest solutions and listen to my questions. Tim will be greatly missed. He is and will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sad and stunned to learn of Tim's passing. I have been a coworker of Tim's for years, and we always appreciated his keen insights on various topics that required critical analysis. He was always the calm, cool, and collected anchor that made our days better. His contributions have made for a safer world. A great guy that will be missed.

May Tim RIP! I am a GM colleague. I don't particularly know Tim. But he sounds like a great person. May he rest in peace! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I worked with Tim 5 years ago in the Safety Team. Tim helped influence a lot of the direction I took when doing my work. Tim was always willing to look over my work and offer constructive feedback on how to make things better. I am saddened to learn of his passing and very sorry for his families loss. Tim and his family are in my families thoughts and prayers.

My Condolences to Tim's Family in this sudden loss. Tim has been a great mentor to me for many years with System Safety and Software development. I have always greatly appreciated Tim's calm, methodical approach to any situation we discussed. I have always looked to Tim for guidance and knowledge, he will be greatly missed by many of his colleagues!

Tim has accompanied my journey in the General Motors safety family from Italy Powertrain Center since the beginning of my career, perhaps it was since 2009 when I started working on safety. I was with him in a thousand of meeting done over years and I had the opportunity to meet him and get to know little of him in Milford back in 2020. Many people from Italy have worked with him and all have considered Tim as mentor.

I will remember Tim for his kindness, humanity and fairness he...

Tim was a colleague that I enjoyed working with over many years at GM. His knowledge input and general discussions around work and non-work items will be missed. Know that he and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Tim will be deeply missed. I met Tim back in 2008 when I first interned at GM and worked closely with him until 2017. I must have come to Tim with thousands of questions over the years and was equally impressed with his patience and his knowledge. It felt like there wasn't a question Tim couldn't answer. Most of all, he helped make everyone around him better.

Tim was an excellent colleague, and I am grateful that I was able to work with him. He will be greatly missed. We send our sincere condolences to Amy, Lindsey, and Duncan. We will keep your family in our prayers during this difficult time.
