To the Family of Bishop McDonnell, I had the honor of seeing his gift of ministry in action many years ago when he visited my mother who was very ill. He came to our home with a mutual dear friend & exuded warmth, compassion, & a delightful sense of humor. It truly made her day! To the Family of Bishop McDonnell- I learned with sadness of Bishop's passing last week. He ordained me to the Permanent Diaconate in May 2013 and had an important impact on my spiritual life. Bishop was always approachable and kind - very pastoral - but also direct in his communication style. Dear Bishop McDonnell. I was privileged to have been your neighbor for more than 11 years. Your humor was second to none. I most especially remember when you first arrived from New York to a City that lives and breathes Boston sports. As a joke you hung a New York Yankee banner that Bishop Maguire, a die heart Boston fan, would have to pass under going in and out of their kitchen.
