Tolbert Tracey GENTRY

GENTRY, Brigadier General Tolbert Tracey, U.S.M.C. (Ret.), of Charlotte Court House, Va., died in Keysville, Va. on October 10, 2009. He was the son of Eugene Gerald Gentry and Floy Dewey Gentry. He was born in Carrollton, Ga. March 31, 1922. A student at Georgia Tech, his education was interrupted with the advent of WWII. He was accepted into the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and received his wings of gold in Corpus Christi, Texas in June, 1943. He flew combat in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. His combat awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, and eight Air medals. He was a member of the elite group of Golden Flying Eagles. General Gentry's survivors include his wife of 66 years, Anna Ruth Stone Gentry; his sister, Floy Shumake of Carrollton, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Schnorbus of Marshall, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by a sister, Geraldine Carpenter, also of Carrollton, Ga. He was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church of Charlotte Court House, Va. and served as an ordained elder. Visitation will be held at the family home 815 Garnett Pump Road, Charlotte Court House, Va. on Friday, October 16, 2009, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009 in the Village Presbyterian Church in Charlotte Court House, Va. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad, and the Village Presbyterian Church. The remains rest at the Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, Va.
