Travis M. Mims, Sr., 83, of Wood Terrace, Middletown, RI, died on Sunday, September 10, 2011, at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. He was born in Anniston, AL, on July 13, 1928. Mr. Mims was a Korean War and Vietnam War veteran serving in the US Navy for 21 years. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4487 in Middletown and the NAACP. He is survived by his wife Alba (Jimenez) Mims, two children, three step-children and two grandchildren. His memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at 11:00AM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport RI.

I served with Travis on the USS Gainard. I was the paymaster and always got sea sick. Travis and I got to be good friends and as a cook he made some special cake for me to help my sea sickness..and it worked. I will always be grateful for his help. We kept in touch after I left the service but as time passed not so much. I will always remember Travis and our good friendship. He was a good man. Thank you Travis. Rest In Peace
