Sgt. Uday Singh was not yet a citizen of the United States when he died fighting for the country. The India-born soldier had written his uncle from Iraq with the happy news that he would return to the United States to be sworn in as a citizen in January. "Then three days later, we get a call from his father," said the uncle, Prem Jay Datt. "We could not believe it. ... Twenty-one years old and he''s gone forever." Singh emigrated to the United States from Chandigargh, India, at 18 and joined the Army a year later. He was killed Dec. 1 when his convoy was ambushed in Habbaniyah, Iraq. Stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Singh lived in Lake Forest, Ill. After a funeral ceremony in India, Singh''s ashes were taken to Arlington National Cemetery to be buried alongside other American soldiers. "He said, ''I''m so proud to wear the U.S. Army uniform,''" his mother, Manjit Singh, said from India. She said her son called from Kuwait and told her not to worry because "we are the best army in the world."

In Memory of Uday ~ (Debra Estep)

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you...
