Adventurous Vacationer
At 79, Ulf Ericson was still working full time as a civil engineer at Washington Group International. On vacations, he trekked in the Himalayas and explored Antarctica. "My father saw himself as someone much younger," said his daughter Catherine. "He had a real passion for engineering. Every year I would say: 'Dad, do they know how old you are?' But he didn't see age as limiting."

Ten years ago, Mr. Ericson returned to mountaineering, which he had loved as a student at Stanford University. He and Helen, his wife of 48 years, had traveled widely. He lived for years in Guatemala and Indonesia and regularly took his family to see relatives in Sweden, where he was raised.

But he wanted to see Nepal's soaring peaks. That trip was the first of his exotic vacations, which continued with a safari in Tanzania, a South Pacific tour and the Antarctica trip. "He didn't brag about his adventures," his daughter said. "Most people just thought he was a quiet, flexible nice guy. I don't think they knew the depths of my father."

Not sure what to say?

We send our deepest sympathy to your family. Many years have passed but sometimes the pain of loss still lingers. May God continue to give his strength and help everyday. Ulf touched the lives of others in positive ways and is sadly missed and will not be forgotten.

I worked directly for Ulf at Gibbs & Hill in New York where I was a project manager. Many of my fellow employees were intimidated by him but I loved his positive energy and enthusiasm. He pushed me hard but we got along great (I always thought that my being 50% Swedish didnt hurt). He was such an excellent mentor. We were working together closely on a very challenging project for the NY Transit Authority when one day in 1983 he invited me into his office and told me that our company had just...

I worked briefly for Ulf as a clerk in the early '90s. I didn't now Ulf very well but I fondly remember him as a kind gentleman and highly respected engineer. I'm very sad to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.

I cant believe its been 10 years and theres not a day that goes by that I dont think of you I miss you very much. You were a great boss

On this ninth anniversary of the tragic events of 2001. I am thinking of you and Helen and Kathy, and would so very much like to express to you personally the love that my wonderful grandfather, David Steinnman felt towards you, Ulf as a fellow engineer and like a son! If you are able to contact me. With love from your cousin, Peter

Happy Birthday!!!

Ulf, so many years later and I still probably owe you so much because you inspired my career. Looking back on those days when you took the time to help a young engineer just starting out, we had no idea that the time would be so fleeting. I have lived everyday knowing that I have a thirst for life. Sure, for work you reserved your genius, but for life you had an incredible zeal to be emulated. These days remembering you brings me back to a happy place. It is only on this day of the year...

Happy Birthday!!!

We will never forget...
