Not sure what to say?

I studied studied horn with Val from 1979 to 1982. What a wonderful teacher and man. He was always disappointed that my major was biology and minor in music and thought it should have been the other way around. I still wonder if he wasn't right. Rest in peace Val.

He always cheered for us.

My thanks to a man who greatly enhanced my joy in music

Hi, Papa. You've been on my mind again lately. I wish you had lived to help me enjoy my retirement! But you did set an example for me of what I don't want to do - over extend myself in my retirement! But, I do wish you were here. We still haven't put your ashes up with Tom yet, but that is the plan. Right now, I am just glad that you are close to us, right here with us. Love you and miss you. Meredyth

He was a major influence in my life and a wonderful mentor. I followed his footsteps and became a Dean of a music college. Thank you, Val

I just learned of Val's passing, and it brought back so many memories of when I was at Humboldt. A quiet, kind, and talented man I wish I'd known better. I will miss him.

To Val's Family & All Those Who Loved Him, I am writing this on November 15th because I was just made aware of Val's passing two days ago. It's impossible to express not only how sad I am that he's gone, but that I didn't have an opportunity to make the drive from Marin County, north to say a proper 'Good-bye' and pay my respects to his family and to those-present who shared a musical bond with him. While [briefly] a member of the HSU music faculty (1979 - 1985) Professor Valgene Phillips was...

My professor, undergraduate advisor, and student teaching supervisor 1972 - 1974, and "pen pal" friend for life. I so enjoyed your letters about family, mutual friends and associates, music, baseball, history, and life.

It is with great sadness to learn of Val´s passing. His sensible answers to difficulties with in the Multiple Subjects program were a trait I always looked forward too. From meetings we both attended, I learned the phrase, "All spin, no traction" as items moved slowly! Val is a part of my fine memories of Humboldt State University. My sympathies to family members and friends.
