I remember and can see and hear Van's smile. booming voice and raucous, sardomic wit, at the PD and at our Plain Dealer Retirees & Expatriates luncheons.

We praise God for the life and service of our veteran. May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord as a grateful nation mourns.

I worked with Van in the composing room when I was a cutboy, brought him hamburgers on the news desk when I was a copyboy; 20 years later I brought him headaches when I was selecting the stories, and he was laying out Page One. Van helped guide me until the day he retired. And he always beat me at poker. Thanks for a life well lived, Van. My prayers for you and your family.

Van was not only a loyal insurance client for over 50 years, but also a friend. My sympathy to all the family.

I worked with you in the Composing Room of The Plain Dealer putting to bed the morning edition of the newspaper for many years. I have always remembered your dedication to perform your serious duties but you had a way to inject humorous quips to brake the tension of deadlines. I have often thought of you and have always respected your character. Thanks for one of life's treasured memories.

While we all sat with you, you cheered us up! Your joking was so typical of your nature and such a gift. As I sat with you during a test, your words of wisdom to me were "Angela, don't give up" and I know exactly what you meant. You were the best father-in-law anyone could ask for! And it is because of you that I have two men in my life that I love so dearly...thank you for that. Again I say, "sweet dreams."
