On Saturday January 13, 2024 Vanessa Laverne Gray “Nessie” of Madison Heights departed this life at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.  She was born December 29, 1962 the daughter of the late James “Ello” Gray Sr. and the late Mary Catherine Gray.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, James Ello Gray Jr. “Jimmie”; grandparents, Mrs. Mattie Wayne and Mr. & Mrs. George M. Gray.


Vanessa was a member of Scott Zion Baptist Church and a 1981 graduate of Amherst County High School.  At one time an employee at Genworth but was a employee at Centra for 36 years in patients accounts until her untimely death.


She is survived is by two sisters, Shaunell G. Herndon and Debra D. Gray; one brother, Terry L. Gray; a very special and devoted nephew, Kevin J. Herndon; two sisters from a different mother, Mrs. Sally Tisdale and Ms. Debbie Schmitt; a very special friend, Anthony “Darryl” Warrick; six aunts, Meverlene Smith (James), Everlene Davis of Lynchburg, Joyce G. Coleman (William), Betty Gray, Joyce M. Gray and Yvonne Gray all of Madison Heights; three uncles, Larry Gray (Patricia) of Rustburg, Kenneth Gray (Geneva) of Madison Heights and Quitman Rosser of Northern, VA and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.


Vanessa had a smile that would light the world especially with those dimples and she would not mind telling you what was on her mind.  She loved taking selfies, shopping and eating at restaurants.


A funeral service will be held 2pm on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Scott Zion Baptist Church.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.  Her remains will be open to the public one hour prior to the service at the church.  The family is receiving friends and the cortege will assemble at 126 Randolph St., Madison Heights.  Condolences may be emailed to [email protected].
