Setting the Agenda
Tim Langer was hesitant about the baby his wife, Vanessa, wanted so badly. He gave her a golden retriever and a cat. But Vanessa, who adored her two younger brothers, James and Jackson, knew she was right. Shortly after their first anniversary, she was pregnant. By then, Tim was pleased, too. "As time went on I was so in love," he said. "It felt like we should have a family."

Vanessa Langer, 29, an office manager at a trade center company, usually set the agenda. She was "fast and furious," said Mr. Langer. She did not walk — she darted. She competed fiercely at computer games and the family football pool and screamed when the Yankees or Giants scored. "Oh goodness," Mr. Langer said, and laughed. Before Vanessa, he used cruder expressions. She got him to stop that. Four months pregnant, she was having "the easiest time of her life," he said.

"She gave me a book," he said. " 'How to Pamper Your Pregnant Wife.' At night I had to go out and get Fig Newtons and Stella D'oros for her."

Not sure what to say?

Dearest Vanessa,

Missing you today. As always. Sending you all my love.

Aunt Robin

Dearest Vanessa. I never had the pleasure of knowing you & if things had turned out different for you that day, I doubt we would ever have crossed paths. But my heart hurts at the loss of your life & that of your sweet baby. I'm so very sorry. And now that I know your name, I will never forget you. I, too, am a Vanessa. 29 (the same age as you were). A newlywed & with my first baby on the way. I promise you & your family, that when my wee one grows up, she/he will know what happened...

Vanessa, I met your husband after your passing, in a weird way too. My mom worked with police and helped Tim with the aftermath. I wish I could have known you, and been there more for him. I was deeply saddened to hear of his death, but knowing you two are together brings some peace. I hope to meet you at the pearly gates.

I signed this guestbook years ago to let you know that Vanessa, a friend of my sister, is still remembered. Vanessa had just connected with my sister the Friday before and shared her wedding photos with her as well and sharing with her where her office was located. My sister passed away in 2005, but every year, and on this 20th anniversary, I wanted to let you know that she continues to be remembered, as do you. A mother’s love is so very strong. Sending an extra long hug your way..

I’m back again. Hoping you and Tim are watching after us down here. This year is tough. Be still my angels.

20 years have passed since you were taken from us all. I pray and think of you daily. Today I attended a memorial for all the 9/11 victims. You were honored and remembered. RIP dear Vanessa, so many have joined you there since you left us. Please watch over the family as the Guardian Angel you have become. Love always, Adriana.

Thinking of you and your family today and always.

Dear Vanessa,
Last night I had a game night with Stephanie. I thought of you often. You are in my heart always. I miss you so much and love you forever.
Aunt Robin (Suz to you)

Dear Rescue Worker,

Thank you for the remembrance. So very much.
