Vardy gave me my first job at Wake Forest School of Medicine in the Department of Nephrology doing hypertension research. He continued to support me and my career path after I suffered a devastating stroke in 1986. He always showed me great warmth and compassion which I will always cherish. My wife Carolyn had similar support which launched her successful career in medicine. We will truly miss him and send our love to Sherry.

I will always remember Dr. Buckalew for his kind and gentle ways. In 1985, he gave me a chance at my first job. I will forever be grateful that he believed in me. Nephrology will never forget you Dr. Buckalew.

I will always remember Vardy as my first mentor. He allowed me to pursue my dreams and set me on a path to success. Very sad time but buffered by such fine memories

A wonderful mentor and a fine human being. Vardy will be missed.

So blessed to have known him at Mt Airy Dialysis, such an amazing nephrologist with the patients and staff. Thinking of your family in this great loss.

Sherry, Susan and I are so sorry to read about Vardy's death. We are devastated! He was such a good friend and colleague. We talked some time ago about Salemtowne and our adventures with Alex Kemp and the dialysis centers. Susan and I will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Buckalew on various committees at Baptist. Such a wonderful and kind person he was. My condolences to the family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Buckalew's passing today. He was a man of unquestioned honor, character and integrity, and always treated people with kindness and respect. I am a better person for having known him, and may he rest in peace.
