With great sadness we are mourning the loss of Vera Oxendine. She was born June 14, 1936 in North Carolina to Magnolia and Martin L. Oxendine. She was a devoted and loving wife to George Washington Oxendine for over 55 years. Vera lost her 19 year battle with breast cancer on Monday October 15 with her loving husband by her side. She is known in the Charleston community for serving as a dedicated Naval wife for over 20 years. She also worked at the Charleston City Market for 30 years selling her and Georges handmade baskets. She and George have been members of Midland Park/Riverbluff Baptist Church for over 40 years. Vera had a deep spiritual and giving life. She has many, many, many nieces and nephews that she helped unselfishly over her life to give them a better life. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Drs. Jimmy and Darlene Rawls, son and daughter in law, Mike and Mary Oxendine, and her grand daughter Maya.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Silgals, Dr. Colby Grossman, Dr. Tom Litton, Dr. Lloyd Mandel, Transitions Health Care, and all of their staff for the wonderful care over the past decades for Vera.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary E. Brewer, Roseanna Hall, and her brother Martin Oxendine. She is preceded in death by her infant son Michael Oxendine, her brothers Charles Oxendine, Birtir Oxendine, her sisters Jane Jacobs, and Magnolia Hammonds.
She will be remembered for a selfless life of giving, loving George and family, and her deep Christian faith.
