Verna Lee Bell, age 69 of Elwood, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Ascension-St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood. She was born Sept. 25, 1955 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Norman J. and Mary N. (Cole) Miller. Verna attended Catholic school until enrollment in Alexandria-Monroe High School. She became a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA) and worked at Parkview Nursing Home and Elwood Health & Living for a combined 25 years. Verna loved her patients and devoted herself to providing outstanding care.
Verna loved crafting, sewing, and crocheting throughout her life. She was known for making and gifting all kind of homemade gifts to family and friends. Family was the center of her universe. Verna loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, dining out, and having fun with all her extended family. She especially enjoyed the holidays when all her family gathered for large dinners and time together. Verna worked hard all her life to provide for her children, and she took pride in being independent. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, mother, sister, and grandmother who will never be forgotten.
Verna’s family includes her mother, Mary Miller of Anderson; 2 children, Toby (Stephanie) Bell of Elwood and Melissa Giselbach (Sy Farr) of Elwood; 4 grandchildren, Michael McGahey, Megan McGahey, Aiden Farr, and Ethan Farr; 2 great-grandchildren, Quinton and Chloe; 6 siblings, Darlene (Clyde) Pool of Anderson, Joe (Kathy) Miller of Elwood, Kenny (Sandy) Miller of Anderson, Marilyn (Dennis) Kilgore of Alexandria, Mark (Andrea) Miller of Alexandria, and Barbara (Keith) Pershing of Anderson; 2 step-sisters, Cathie (David) Dempsey of Muncie and Jeannie (David) Weightman of Brownsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her father and brother, Warren L. Miller.
A funeral service celebrating Verna’s life will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Scott Blaylock of Life Church officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 3 pm prior to the funeral at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to assist with expenses. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.

I knew verna through having worked with her during the ice storm we had several years back. That was one of the best 2 work weeks of my life. She was a great aide and person in general. She will truly be missed.
