Verne Paul Wellman, 71, Topeka, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at his home. He was born Oct. 29, 1931, in Birmingham, Iowa, the son of William Wellman and Verla Wellman. He was raised in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1949. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1949 to 1954. Mr. Wellman moved to Minneapolis, Minn., in 1959, where he worked as a waiter until he retired. He moved to Topeka in May 2001. He lived with his niece and nephew, Bob and Ruby Adams, in Topeka the last months of his life. His niece, Willa Miller, also helped care for him. Mr. Wellman was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and he attended the Heartland Worship Center. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Wellman and Tommy Wellman; and three sisters, Patty Huckins, Peggy Harris and Virginia Hawks. Survivors include a sister, Isabelle Huckins, Yucca Valley Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Heartland Worship Center Church of God, 1401 S.W. Harrison, in Topeka. Mr. Wellman bequeathed his body to The University of Kansas School of Medicine. Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka is in charge of arrangements.
