Resident of San Jose
Vernon passed away, surrounded by family, on December 5, 2017 at the age of 84. Born on June 19, 1933 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the eldest of four children to Robert and Louise Chang of Pearl City, Hawaii. After graduating from Mid-Pacific High School ('51) , he joined the US Air Force rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Living in San Jose for 44 years, he touched many lives within the community. Vern formed a Hawaiian band called `Eono Kane, played at birthday parties, weddings, funerals, sporting events, festivals, and luau's. He was a DJ for KPFA and KKUP, non-profit radio stations where he played Hawaiian music, and promoted various talents and events throughout the Bay Area.
Vernon is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth ("Aunty Betty"), and younger brother Alvin ("Uncle Al") Chang. Survived by two sisters Robertha Omori (Walter) and Sylvia Murakami (Joe Young), son Roderick (Margaret) Chang, daughters Rochelle Ledwith (the late, Steven), and Renee Moreno (Adrian), grandchildren Rowan and Rebekah Ledwith, Cassandra Wong (Ryan) and Stuart Chang, Ariana Moreno, great-grandson Wes Wong, and loyal companion Leinani.
On Saturday, December 16, 2017 there will be a Viewing from 10 AM to 5 PM and Services will be at 1 PM to 2 PM at Willow Glen Funeral Home 1039 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125.

I enjoyed listening to Uncle Vern's radio show, especially the Christmas show, on KKUP. He had a special and unique talent that will be missed by many. I hope he is playing his music up in Heaven for everyone up there.

I have been a friend of the Chang family for 25+years. It has been my privilege to know them and have been a part of Eono Kane. Uncle Vern has contributed much to the Hawaiian community and I pray his legacy will continue.
